Biography:

 

Dr. Lennart Sandholm was born 1932 in Linköping, Sweden. He graduated from the Chalmers Institute of Technology, Gothenburg in 1955 and took his doctorate in 1963 at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. He studied business administration at the Stockholm University 1963-1965. As a Fellow of the Sweden-America Foundation, he studied quality management in the USA 1965-1966. The studies included courses at the Rutgers University, as well as study visits to more than 40 companies from the East Coast to the West Coast.

 

Sandholm is an internationally well-known expert in business development with a focus on total quality. He has worked in this field in 60 years. Before founding the consulting and training institute Sandholm Associates in 1971, he was the Corporate Quality Manager of the multinational appliances manufacturer Electrolux for a period of 10 years. Sandholm started 1973 an international career. This has taken him to more than 40 countries on all continents as a management consultant and lecturer.

 

Among his clients were international organizations as United Nations, national institutions and multinational companies. His international lecturing has attracted 30,000 managers and other professionals from about 100 countries. He has published many books and articles on quality matters including contributions to three editions of Dr. Juran´s Quality Handbook (the international reference book in quality management). Sandholm started the first university program in quality management in Sweden in 1983, at Linköping University. He served as Adjunct Professor of Quality Management at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm 1989-1995. He was Adjunct Professor at the Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand 2000-2007.

 

Sandholm was elected Academician of the International Academy for Quality (IAQ) in 1980. Honorary Member of IAQ, Honorary Member of the European Organization for Quality, Fellow of the American Society for Quality, Honorary Advisor to the China Association for Quality, Honorary Professor at the Shanghai Academy of Quality Management, Honorary Doctor at the University of the Republic of Uruguay, Honorary Member of La Fundacion Empresaria para la Calidad y la Excelencias (Argentina), Honorary Member of Jamaica Society for Quality, Honorary Member of the Philippine Society for Quality Control, Past President of the Swedish Association for Quality.

 

The American Society for Quality has honored Sandholm with three major awards - the Grant Award for 1984, the Lancaster Award for 1994 and the Distinguished Service Medal for 2008. The Asia Pacific Quality Organization awarded him with the Harrington-Ishikawa Medal for 2002. The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) awarded Sandholm with its gold medal in 2006 “for his extremely outstanding contributions to the development and training in the area of total quality in Sweden and internationally”.
