Title: 2020 ASQE Insights on Excellence Report



On behalf of the quality professional community, I am excited to present the 2020 ASQE Insights on Excellence (IoE) Category Report. The data in this report were collected in a foundational questionnaire examining how quality initiatives are progressing in the digital era. The goal of this annual category report is to deliver actionable guidance to our member communities to pursue best practices in eight specific organizational excellence and operational performance categories year over year. With the many challenges facing the current and future global economy, the need for guidance within the quality profession is even more paramount.


This survey of 1,036 participating organizations was global in scope, with 30% of companies based in North America, 30% based in the Asia-Pacific region, 30% based in Europe, and 10% in other regions around the world. Respondents represent a variety of industries, and half are C-suite executives or vice presidents, while the other half (50%) are quality professionals. This presentation overview, and Category report, features the high-level findings across all eight of the IoE benchmarking categories: Operations, Voice of Customer (VOC), Workforce, Leadership, Strategy, Technology, Measurements & Results, and Barriers & Disruptors. The maturity-level scores shown below represent the 2020 respondents’ survey responses, and fall into four categories: reactive, proactive, progressive, and predictive.



Janet recently retired from Sargento Foods Inc. in Wisconsin, USA where she held the position of Vice President of Quality & Food Safety Systems. Janet has been involved in the development, implementation, and auditing of quality and food safety systems for over 40 years.  She holds a master’s degree in quality from Marian College, WI and a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.  She is an ASQ CMQ/OE, CQE, CQA, Fellow and recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal.

Janet has been a member leader since 1991, starting with volunteering at her local Section.  Janet has been a contributing author for the Customer-Supplier Division’s Supplier Management Handbook.  She was actively involved in many industry activities including the National Cheese Institute Regulatory Committee and the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board Food Safety Working Group.  Since 2006 she has held an appointed position on the Board of Visitors for the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Wisconsin Madison.  In retirement, Janet continues volunteering for ASQ as the Chair of the Society, a member of the Nominations Committee and the Strategic Planning Committee.  As a Master Naturalist and avid birder, she and her husband lead a weekly bird walk and she participates in several citizen science projects to help improve the quality of our environment.
